This week, I am discussing and transporting you back to the Kingdom of Benin. Regarded by some as one of the unofficial wonders of the ancient world, the historical Kingdom of Benin dates as far back as the year 1180 and was ruled by King Oba Eweka until his death in 1246. It is now currently inhabited by the Edo people of Nigeria.
The Benin Kingdom was widely known for its exceptional craftsmanship with ivory, bronze and mud, which you can see through some of the pictures in this blog. A lot of this exceptional craftsmanship was taken by British forces in 1897 during the British invasion. Until this day, there are still ongoing negotiations for these artefacts to be returned to their rightful place in the city of Benin.
Make sure you keep a lookout for more of my blogs throughout the academic year.
