It is natural to feel low or lack energy during the darker months, but it is important to try and find things to do that will help you to stay positive. Here are our top tips to help you have a fun January.
Plan things to look forward to
Having a variety of things to look forward to each week will keep you motivated and fend off boredom. Whether it’s a games night with your housemates, a catch up with an old friend or a movie night, there are plenty of fun things that you can get in the diary.

Go outside
With a lot more things being online it is important to still get fresh air and resist the temptation to stay in bed all day. Exposure to daylight is good for us, so try and go on a quick lunchtime walk every day. You can use this time to explore the Clifton Downs, wander around Stoke Park or just do a quick walk around the block.

Make an effort to have regular catch up with friends
Stay engaged with your family and friends, having positive phone or video calls can go a long way in lifting your mood. Organise some virtual activities such as a book club, a game of charades or a quiz night.

Random acts of kindness
Helping others is good for your own mental health and wellbeing. There are many small things you can do to brighten up someone’s day and in turn, make yourself feel good. For example, give a compliment to your friend, offer to cook dinner for your house or donate to a local foodbank.

Try something new
Try out a new hobby or activity! This could be something big like learning a new language or as small as trying out a new recipe. You might find something you really enjoy doing that could be a good way to de-stress. Some great examples include yoga, cycling, baking and knitting.

There is no shame in asking for help during difficult times. If you are feeling low reach out to those close to you such as family, friends or your personal tutor. The Students’ Union and UWE Bristol offer a range of services such as our Advice Centre, the UWE Wellbeing Service and our 24/7 Crisis Text line service.
