January Update from Jane

An update from Jane on what the Presidents are working on to help the student experience during this difficult time.

Firstly, I would like to say a Happy New Year to you all, it may not have been the start of 2021 we were all hoping for, but as a Presidents Team, we want to reassure you that we are here for you. Since the start of the pandemic in March, we have been working behind the scenes every day continuously pushing for the best possible student academic experience in such a difficult year.

Here are some of the things we are working on:

Tuition fees – We join the voices of students nationally calling the Government to intervene. In the meantime, please do continue to raise your academic concerns and we would ensure that your experience is improved.  You can also decide to put a fees complaint via UWE Complaints Process

Rent – I and the team have been in several conversations with the University Directorate Team in relation to accommodation and we have successfully lobbied for:

  • Six weeks rent refund to students living on UWE Bristol campus accommodation who are not able to return to their accommodation.
  • Unite accommodation have also confirmed that they will provide a 50% discount for four weeks.
  • As a team, we have reached out to MP Darren Jones, MP Kerry Mccarthy and MP Thangam Debbonaire. We want to encourage them to make use of their influence to encourage landlords to offer discounts or contract release for students' who are not able to come into Bristol. We have also created a letter that you can send to your landlord to ask for a reduction or a refund on your rent for the time that you are not there. Email sumarketing@uwe.ac.uk for a copy of the letter.

No detriment – We have been in ongoing conversations with the Universities directorate team to present your concerns regarding safety net measures. After the University’s announcement on the measures which will support students on an individual and cohort basis.  We aim to work with our reps and students to provide simplified explanations of what the guidance means and how it will be applied.

As your elected representatives, we will continue to represent you and answer any questions you may have. We will provide updates as we continue to raise your concerns to the University. If you have any concerns or questions, please keep us informed. We are here to listen to you!

Thank you and stay safe.
