Every year more and more individuals are choosing to go vegan.

Going vegan is the fastest growing food trend. According to The Vegan Society there are now over 600,000 vegans in the UK, which has quadrupled since 2014. This could be down to the many great benefits going vegan has, while preventing the exploitation of animals is the most common reason people go vegan it is not the only reason. A well-planned vegan diet provides all the nutrients your body needs and can actually be a great way to improve your diet.
Environmental benefits are another reason why an individual may choose to go vegan. The production of meat, particularly beef, places a heavy burden on the environment which contributes to deforestation, habitat loss and species extinction. Researchers at the University of Oxford found that cutting meat and dairy products from your diet could reduce an individual’s carbon footprint from food by up to 73 per cent.
With all the top supermarkets now having their own vegan ranges and Bristol being full of great vegan options, it is easier than ever to give the vegan lifestyle a try. Veganuary is a non-profit organisation that encourages people to go vegan for the month of January as a way to promote and educate about a vegan lifestyle. According to a report by Mintel during the 2019 campaign, more than 1 million people took their pledge to try a vegan diet and over 500 brands, restaurants and supermarkets promoted the campaign, launching 200+ new vegan products.
Although it may be too late to do the whole month of January you can still sign the pledge on the Veganuary website here and receive useful resources such as budget meal plan, a vegan starter kit and many helpful tips. There are also loads of great recipes on their website such as smoky mac & cheese, roasted vegetable lasagne and vegetable curry. If you don’t want to try a whole month, why not try going vegan for a week or just incorporate more vegan meals into your diet.
