Commit to reducing the number of leaflets/flyers at Freshers' Fair

Extra Information: 

Thousands of leaflets are printed for Freshers' Fair, using up time, money and resources on leaflets not many people actually read. 

 

When you went to the fair as a first year, did you actually read all the leaflets you were given, or did they end up in the bin? 

 

We should be encouraging students to be more conscious of the impact of their actions on the environment. Not only does it cost a lot of money for these flyers to be printed, but think of the trees! Most of these will end up in the bin, and probably not recycling. Surely it would be better to direct students to Facebook pages or the SU website, and this can be done without the use of leaflets. 

 

Actions Taken

  • This idea opened on 14th March 2017 and closes for voting on 4th April 2017.

  • This Idea has conditionally passed. Work will start on this Idea unless it is vetoed by 50%+1 of the Student Council Meeting. Click here for more info

  • This Idea was vetoed at the Student Council Meeting and has failed. 

  • This idea has been marked as a win. Stall holders at Freshers Fair are now required to sign a sustainibility pledge that amongst other things, requires them to minimise the number of flyers/paper vouchers, source items through ethical supply chains and avoid any unecessary single use plastic.

1:30pm on 16 Mar 17 It's super wasteful for clubs and societies to print ridiculous amounts of leaflets that are then just thrown in the bin. When I was a fresher the amount of rubbish I was given was huge, I looked back at next to nothing and found all the societies I was interested in online. The Yoga society didn't distribute any paper leaflets this year and just took email addresses from those interested and we are now one of the biggest societies at UWE. You don't need to waste all these materials to get members, you just need to engage with them!

12:37pm on 16 Mar 17 Better training should be given to clubs and societies about how to engage students at fresher's fair. This should have a focus on sustainability and paper waste - there are many other ways for UWE's clubs and societies to engage students more effectively than posters which will ultimately end up in the bin!

9:14am on 16 Mar 17 It's shameful for an institution with such a high focus on sustainability to see the carpet of flyers on the floor at Fresher's Fair every year. Better training for clubs | Societies using social media to gain marketing and spread info about their group, 'like and share' competitions etc!
