The Students' Union at UWE to renew the BDS (Boycott Divestment Sanction) motion that bans the sale of all Israeli products at the SU

The Students' Union Democratic Procedures Committee has labelled this Idea as CONTENTIOUS. Apart from matters that pass with a simple majority when at least 1000 students have voted, any contentious Idea will drop a grade when scored.

Israel has committed many war crimes Resolutions including: The Fourth Geneva Convention; The International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights; The United Nations Charter; The Hague Convention and many including the use of illegal chemical weapons targeting UN schools and civilians. This motion is targeting the illegal war crimes and the vast UN violations committed by the State of Israel.

The motion is put in place to send a message that no one should violate international law and simply get away with it.

This is the reality of Palestinians, within those illegal settlements, being denied their basic human rights of shelter, food, freedom and the right to life.

The State of Israel has breached 65 UN more international laws.

The following are some of the international laws breached:

Violation of the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination as codified in Resolution 1514 and 2625

Violation of international humanitarian law prohibiting:

1. The establishment of Israeli settlements and the expulsions of Palestinians from their territory (Art. 49 and 147 of the 4th Geneva Convention);

2. Mistreatment, torture and prolonged administrative detention of Palestinians in Israeli prisons (Art. 3, 32 and 78 of the 4th Geneva Convention);

3. Non-compliance with the right of return of Palestinian refugees to their homes (Resolution 194);

4. Collective punishment of the Palestinian population of Gaza, where the World Health Organisation reports that life will not be sustainable by the year 2020 (Art. 33 of the4th Geneva Convention).

This motion is to raise the awareness of mistreatment by the Israeli Government, and indeed is not intended to offend Jewish citizens or their faith.

Judiasm is not Zionism, and Zionism is not Judiaism.

5:13pm on 15 Nov 17 As far as I am aware (please provide evidence if I am wrong) UWE students are free to setup a Jewish society. Jewish academics are still free to speak on any subject.

10:12pm on 11 Nov 17 It is true that the state of Israel has engaged in unacceptable practices. If however we are going to enact boycotts on countries engaged in practices contrary to international law, let's please take a consistent approach in doing so.

1:49pm on 9 Nov 17 The BDS resolution is a front for antisemites to single out the only Jewish state in the world. Not only does it ban Israeli products (many of which we use in our day to day lives) but also bans the ability for Jewish students to set up Jewish Israeli societies at UWE, bans Israeli academics from participating in Student Union events and marginalises Jewish students. Please vote against this racist motion.
